Accessible Pedestrian Signals Installation Project
The Accessible Pedestrian Signals Installation Project shows how the City of Laguna Niguel upgraded pedestrian signal equipment at six key intersections. The goal of this project was to replace old or non‑functioning pedestrian push buttons with American Disabilities Act (ADA)‑compliant accessible controls that include vibrotactile buttons and customizable audio messages. These improvements help ensure safer, more inclusive crossings for pedestrians of all abilities.
Project Background
Laguna Niguel identified several locations where existing pedestrian push buttons were outdated or not working. Because these signals are used by people of all ages and abilities, the City prioritized accessible upgrades that meet ADA standards. The project covered intersections along corridors such as Alicia Parkway, La Paz Road, Crown Valley Parkway, and Golden Lantern Drive.
Installation and Upgrades
To complete this project, Econolite Systems, Inc. removed the previous legacy pedestrian controls and installed new accessible pedestrian signal (APS) equipment that includes:
- Vibrotactile pedestrian‑activated buttons that provide physical feedback
- Customizable audio tones and spoken messages for sight‑impaired pedestrians
- Signals designed to meet ADA and MUTCD accessibility requirements
These systems improve the usability and safety of crossings by providing audio and tactile information to pedestrians, which complements traditional visual walk signals. :
Key Features of the APS Upgrade
- ADA‑compliant vibrotactile push buttons
- Audio messages tailored to crossing conditions
- Enhanced pedestrian accessibility across corridors
- Modern signal components designed for longevity
- Integration with existing traffic signal infrastructure
Operational Benefits
As a result of this installation project, the City now provides:
- Clear tactile feedback for pedestrians with limited vision
- Informative audio messages for safer crossings
- Greater accessibility for all users at key intersections
- Improved compliance with ADA and MUTCD guidelines
- A more inclusive pedestrian network across Laguna Niguel
Overall, the Accessible Pedestrian Signals Installation Project enhances safety, accessibility, and mobility for pedestrians throughout the City’s corridor network.
