Maine DOT - 104 Statewide Traffic Signal Upgrades

Statewide Traffic Signal System Updates with Cloud-Based ITS and Connected Vehicle Technologies Implementation

Maine Department of Transportation

In 2021, Econolite Systems, Inc. (ESI) was contracted by the Maine Department of Transportation (DOT) to begin a Design-Build program to reconstruct 104 intersections. The program also included civil works projects, implementation of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), connected vehicle technologies, updated network communications, and new traffic signal systems. The new traffic signal systems included ATC cabinets, ATC controllers, detection sensors, and a cloud-based Advanced Transportation Management System (ATMS). ESI is providing Maine DOT Econolite ATC cabinets, Cobalt ATC controllers with EOS firmware, and its cloud-based Centracs Mobility ATMS. ESI is also providing network engineering and equipment, systems configuration, and implementation of the cloud-based ATMS. All aspects of the State’s traffic signal system are now using leading-edge ITS technologies from Econolite. With the deployment and implementation of the Cobalt controllers running the EOS firmware and the Centracs Mobility cloud-based ATMS, Maine DOT is now leveraging advanced Centracs modules, including Signal Performance Measures (SPM), which includes Pattern Optimization, and Edaptive for adaptive signal control.
