Sacramento Autoscope Detection Case Study

The Sacramento Autoscope detection project helped the City of Sacramento, California improve how left turns were detected and managed at several busy intersections. Because traditional vehicle detection struggled with turning movements, the city needed a better way to track and respond to traffic flows, especially where turn volumes were high.

Project Background

In Sacramento, several intersections handle heavy left‑turn volumes during peak periods. However, standard loop or presence detectors often fail to detect vehicles accurately in dedicated turn lanes. Therefore, the city explored Autoscope video detection technologies to improve this performance, reduce delays, and increase overall intersection efficiency.

Autoscope Detection System

To address left‑turn detection issues, Econolite deployed Autoscope® video detection systems at targeted intersections. Autoscope uses advanced video analytics to monitor traffic movements, including left turns. Then, it sends reliable detection calls to the signal controller so timing can be adjusted in real time. This helps intersections better serve all modes of travel, including cars, bicycles, and pedestrians.

Additionally, the video detection system was calibrated to distinguish overlapping movements and reduce false calls. Because Autoscope analytics work through image processing, detection remains effective even when vehicles queue in adjacent lanes. This results in more accurate signal timing and fewer unnecessary stops at intersections.

Deployment and Integration

Econolite installed the Autoscope video detection units and integrated them with the existing signal controllers. Then, field technicians worked closely with Sacramento traffic engineers to verify performance and fine‑tune detection zones. Because accurate calibration is essential, technicians tested multiple scenarios to ensure detection was reliable during peak and off‑peak periods.

In addition to detection upgrades, the project improved communications between intersections and the traffic management center. This allowed operators to monitor real‑time conditions and make adjustments more quickly than before.

Operational Benefits

As a result of the Sacramento Autoscope detection project, the city saw several benefits:

  • More accurate left‑turn vehicle detection
  • Improved signal timing and lane utilization
  • Reduced delays during peak traffic periods
  • Better responsiveness to real‑time traffic changes
  • Enhanced detection for bicycles, pedestrians, and cars

This Autoscope deployment strengthened intersection performance and supported Sacramento’s larger traffic management goals.
