Pasadena Bicycle Detection Differentiation Case Study

The Pasadena bicycle detection differentiation project helped the City of Pasadena, California improve signal operations and safety at key intersections. Because standard vehicle detectors could not reliably distinguish bicycles from cars, the city needed a more advanced detection approach. This project tested detection systems that clearly identified bicycles and improved how signals responded to bicyclists at the stop bar.

Project Background

Pasadena’s network includes many bicycle‑friendly and multimodal corridors. However, traditional vehicle detection systems often treat bicycles as cars or fail to detect them at all. Because of this limitation, bicyclists could experience delays, missed green time, and reduced safety at signalized intersections. Therefore, the city initiated the Pasadena bicycle detection differentiation effort to improve detection accuracy and improve intersection performance for all road users.

Improved Bicycle Detection Approach

To address this challenge, Econolite evaluated detection technologies that could distinguish bicycles from other road users. The new detection systems included specificity to identify both bicycles and larger vehicles. In addition, the selected solutions generated reliable calls to the signal controller, ensuring that bicyclists were recognized during each phase of the signal cycle. As a result, green time was allocated more fairly and safely to bicyclists during peak and off‑peak conditions.

Deployment and Integration

The bicycle detection differentiation system was installed at targeted intersections where bicycle traffic was frequent or where standard detection had failed. Installed technology included advanced sensors capable of identifying bicycles independently from cars. In addition, the system was calibrated and tested so that it could immediately provide accurate detection calls to the signal controller.

Because detection accuracy affects signal timing and safety, this deployment included detailed field testing and fine‑tuning. Field technicians worked closely with Pasadena traffic staff to verify that both bicycles and vehicles were detected accurately. In this way, the system was tuned to deliver reliable performance in real time.

Operational Benefits

As a result of the Pasadena bicycle detection differentiation project, the city realized several benefits:

  • More accurate detection of bicycles at key intersections
  • Reduced delay for bicyclists waiting at signals
  • Improved signal timing responsiveness
  • Greater safety for multimodal traffic
  • Enhanced user experience for bicyclists and drivers alike

Overall, the Pasadena CA bicycle detection differentiation effort strengthened multimodal signal operations and helped foster a more equitable traffic system for all users.
