Citywide Intelligent Transportation System Upgrade Project

The citywide intelligent transportation system upgrade project helps the City of San Ramon, California modernize its traffic infrastructure and improve network monitoring. The City selected Econolite Systems, Inc. (ESI) to upgrade field assets, strengthen signal communications, and support future intelligent transportation technologies.

Because traffic demands continue to grow across the region, modernizing the City’s ITS infrastructure was essential. As a result, the project focuses on improving signal connectivity, detection capabilities, and data visibility across multiple intersections.

Citywide Intelligent Transportation System Upgrade Overview

In 2024, the City of San Ramon awarded Econolite the contract for a citywide ITS upgrade project. The project includes improvements along key corridors, including Bollinger Canyon Road between Dougherty Road and Albion Road.

The goal of the project is to upgrade existing ITS infrastructure so the City can better monitor and program its traffic signal network. By improving communications and field equipment, the City can respond faster to traffic conditions and improve corridor operations.

Infrastructure and Communications Improvements

The citywide ITS upgrade includes several key infrastructure improvements:

  • Replacement and improvement of existing traffic signal field assets
  • Installation of fiber optic communications infrastructure
  • Deployment of network switches and fiber optic equipment
  • Installation of pull boxes, conduits, and communications cables
  • Integration of intersection detection technologies

These improvements strengthen the City’s communications network and support reliable data transmission between intersections and the traffic management system.

Detection and Corridor Monitoring

As part of the project, detection camera sensors will be installed at 14 intersections. These sensors support the City’s adaptive traffic signal and signal performance monitoring programs.

Detection technology allows traffic engineers to collect detailed vehicle movement data. Therefore, operations teams can analyze intersection performance and adjust signal timing more effectively.

Supporting the City’s ITS Master Plan

The citywide intelligent transportation system upgrade also supports the City’s broader ITS and fiber optic master plans. Expanding the communications network prepares the transportation system for future technologies and connected infrastructure.

In addition, improved networking allows the City to scale its traffic operations platform and support future traffic management applications.

Operational Benefits

The citywide ITS upgrade provides several important operational benefits:

  • Improved monitoring of traffic signal operations
  • Enhanced communications between intersections and central systems
  • Better data collection through advanced detection technology
  • Support for adaptive signal control and signal performance measurement
  • A scalable foundation for future smart city mobility solutions

Overall, the project strengthens San Ramon’s transportation infrastructure and helps the City improve traffic flow, reliability, and system visibility across its signal network.
