Kansas City Streetcar South Main Street Extension Transit Signal Priority (TSP)

The transit signal priority project supported the Kansas City Streetcar South Main Street extension by improving how streetcar vehicles interact with traffic signals. The City of Kansas City, Missouri deployed signal upgrades that allow streetcars to receive priority at intersections. As a result, streetcar travel times improved and service became more reliable.

These upgrades help reduce delays for transit riders and improve overall corridor efficiency. In addition, the system supports better coordination between transit vehicles and traffic signals.

Transit Signal Priority for Streetcar Operations

Transit Signal Priority (TSP) gives streetcar vehicles priority or extended green time when they approach an intersection. This allows the streetcar to pass through with fewer stops compared to traditional signal timing.

In this project, TSP was integrated with existing traffic signal controllers and signal communication systems. This ensured that when a streetcar was nearing an intersection, the signal timing logic responded appropriately.

Installation and Coordination

Econolite assisted with the configuration and deployment of the signal priority system. This included:

  • Integrating transit priority logic into traffic signal controllers
  • Ensuring communication between streetcar detection systems and signal cabinets
  • Testing and calibrating TSP requests to avoid conflicts with other traffic movements
  • Coordinating with city operations staff and transit agencies

These upgrades help ensure that priority requests from streetcars are recognized quickly and consistently by signal infrastructure. This allows Kansas City to improve transit signal performance while maintaining overall traffic flow.

Key Features of the TSP System

  • Priority logic for streetcar vehicles at signals
  • Integration with traffic signal controllers and cabinets
  • Supports centralized monitoring via traffic management software
  • Calibrated signal response to transit priority requests
  • Collaboration between transit and operations agencies

Operational Benefits

Transit Signal Priority provides several measurable benefits. First, streetcar vehicles experience reduced delays at intersections. Next, passengers enjoy more consistent travel times. In addition, improved signal response helps reduce dwell time at stops and improves overall service reliability.

Additionally, the system can work with advanced technologies such as Centracs® traffic management software and modern traffic signal controllers. These systems help operations staff monitor performance and fine‑tune signal timing plans in real time.

Overall, this transit signal priority project supported stronger transit operations and helped the Kansas City Streetcar provide reliable service along the South Main Street extension.
