Fort Bend County, TX

Fort Bend County is located within the greater Houston metropolitan area of southeast Texas. The County encompasses more than 300,000 roadway miles. In 2022, Fort Bend County Engineering Department in cooperation with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), embarked upon a highway and infrastructure improvement project for FM 521 to increase capacity and safety. The project entails reconstructing and widening the existing FM 521 from a two-lane, undivided roadway to a four-lane roadway with two 12-foot-wide travel lanes in each direction, a 16-foot-wide noncontinuous raised grassy median, and a 10-foot-wide side path along the east side of FM 521. Left and right turn lanes and median openings would be provided at designated locations.

As part of the FM 521 widening and improvement project, periodic traffic signal analyses are conducted to determine if additions, updates, or changes are needed for traffic signals during the construction phases. In 2025, it was determined that the design and construction of a new temporary traffic signal system was needed at the intersection of FM 521 and Southern Colony Ave.

In 2025, Econolite was selected to design, construct, and install the new temporary traffic signal system. Econolite will be responsible for installing all of the conduit, electrical conductors and services, and hardware, including signal heads for the traffic signal system at the FM 521 Southern Colony Ave. intersection.
