City of Houston, TX

The City of Houston, Texas (City) is the largest city in the United States by total geographic area, spanning more than 630 square miles, and is the most populous city in Texas. Houston is a global hub for strategic industries such as energy (petroleum and natural gas), biomedical research, software development, and aeronautics—home to NASA’s Johnson Space Center.

The City’s roadway infrastructure is extensive, featuring a highway network with more than 2,500 traffic signals across 16,000 lane miles. Oversight of this vast transportation system falls under the Transportation and Drainage Operations Division within the City’s Public Works Department.

To ensure optimal performance of its traffic signal network, the City awarded Econolite a multi-year traffic signal maintenance contract. This agreement includes preventative, reactive, and improvement-related services, as well as the provision of materials for both recurring and unplanned projects. Initially structured as a three-year term with an optional fourth year, the contract was expanded partway through the first year with an additional $1 million to cover services for unplanned events impacting the City’s transportation infrastructure. Under this contract, Econolite delivers comprehensive maintenance and operational support, including:

  • Preventative and reactive maintenance to reduce component failure risks and restore functionality of traffic control devices.
  • Upgrades and alterations to improve safety and operational efficiency across the roadway network.
  • Full responsibility for the City’s traffic management assets, including:

– Traffic and pedestrian signals
– Detection sensors
– Traffic controllers and cabinets
– Battery Backup Systems (BBS)
– Roadway signage, including Dynamic Message Signs (DMS)
– Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras
– Highway lighting
– Traffic control beacons
– Power systems supporting deployed traffic control infrastructure

Through this partnership, Econolite continues to support the City of Houston in maintaining a safe, efficient, and resilient transportation network for its residents and visitors.
