Transit Signal Priority System Case Study

The transit signal priority system improved how buses and transit vehicles move through signalized intersections. Because buses often faced delays at red lights, the agency needed a way to give priority to transit vehicles while preserving overall traffic flow. Therefore, the integrated system was deployed to adjust signal timing and support faster transit movement.

Project Background

Cities with high transit usage need systems that help buses stay on schedule. However, shared signal timing sometimes caused transit vehicles to stop unnecessarily. To reduce this delay, the transit signal priority system was implemented so that when a transit vehicle approaches an intersection, the signal timing can adapt in real time and reduce red light delay. This helps transit stay on schedule and improves reliability for riders.

Transit Priority System Deployment

Econolite supported the integration of the transit priority system with existing traffic signals using the Centracs® Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS). Through this platform, priority requests are detected and signal timing adjustments are made automatically. Because the system uses real‑time data, operators can make data‑driven decisions and optimize timing plans more effectively.

The deployment also included upgrades to detection systems and communications. Enhanced detection ensures that buses are identified early as they approach intersections. Improved communications help ensure priority requests are processed without delay. As a result, transit vehicles experience fewer stops and shorter travel times.

Key Features and Benefits

Operational Improvements

  • Fewer stops for transit vehicles
  • Improved on‑time performance for buses
  • Better signal responsiveness to priority requests
  • Enhanced rider experience due to reduced delay
  • Greater insight into system performance and timing impacts

Overall, the transit signal priority system strengthened how transit and traffic signals work together. This deployment provides a scalable foundation for future transit performance improvements.
