New intersection monitoring and control solutions provide deep safety insights. The project helps Caltrans move closer to its Vision Zero goals.
August 26, 2024 — San Francisco, CA Econolite and Derq have announced a state-of-the-art safety system deployment. This project is a partnership with the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) in Orange County’s District 12 (D12). Econolite is part of Umovity, while Derq leads the industry in real-time AI solutions.
A Powerful Partnership
“Econolite has a long history of supporting Caltrans with world-class solutions,” said Mike McIntee, Econolite’s Vice President of Western Sales. “This project leverages the very best of both companies. Specifically, the solution supports current and future ITS elements. Derq was the obvious choice to deliver AI-based analytics. These insights can make significant gains toward Vision Zero.”
The system combines Econolite’s Autoscope® Vision with Derq’s real-time AI insights. Because it uses cooperative perception and data fusion, it can study the patterns of all roadway users. Consequently, it provides actionable insights to improve safety and efficiency. It also adjusts signal operations and broadcasts messages to connected vehicles.
Empowering Data-Informed Decisions
“We are proud to work with Caltrans and Econolite,” said Karl Jeanbart, co-founder and COO of Derq. “Our AI technology and predictive analytics will empower Orange County. It allows them to make data-informed decisions as they work to eliminate road fatalities.”
The project covers 52 signalized intersections in District 12. Derq’s software integrates seamlessly with Autoscope Vision systems. This helps identify high-risk areas and multimodal traffic. Furthermore, the platform gathers information on traffic volumes and signal compliance. It also tracks near-miss incidents involving vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians.
Real-Time Safety Broadcasts
Econolite’s EOS software uses this real-time data to improve traffic flow. Additionally, the system integrates with the District’s connected vehicle solution. This allows the infrastructure to broadcast safety information directly to users.
Agencies receive this data in real time. Therefore, they can react more effectively to both short-term and long-term conditions. To further improve safety, they can broadcast high-risk alerts to cellular devices and smart infrastructure.
Supporting Long-Term Goals
This deployment supports Caltrans’ goal of eliminating fatal crashes by 2050. This mission is part of the 2023-2024 Road Safety Action Plan. To date, Derq has active deployments in 13 states and several international locations. These systems address immediate needs while building a safer connected ecosystem for the future.
