South Denver Adaptive ATMS Deployment Case Study

The South Denver adaptive ATMS deployment helped the South Denver Metropolitan Area in Colorado improve traffic flow and signal responsiveness. Because traffic patterns vary significantly throughout the day and across corridors, the region needed a system that could adapt signal timing in real time. Therefore, the area selected an adaptive traffic control solution that integrates real-time data with signal timing plans.

Project Background

In the South Denver area, traffic congestion often arises due to commuter peaks, special events, and travel demand shifts. Traditional fixed timing plans were limited in addressing these variations. Because of this, the South Denver adaptive ATMS deployment focused on improving how the system responds to evolving traffic conditions throughout the day.

Adaptive ATMS Solution

Econolite supported the deployment of an adaptive traffic control system using
Centracs® Adaptive Traffic Management System (ATMS).
This solution continuously monitors traffic patterns and updates signal timing on the fly. Because the system uses real-time speed and volume data, it can respond quickly to congestion events or shifts in demand. This leads to smoother flows and fewer delays.

In addition to adaptive signal logic, the deployment included upgraded detection systems to gather accurate vehicle and flow data. Enhanced detection feeds more reliable information to the ATMS, which improves the quality of timing decisions and reduces unnecessary stops.

Deployment and Field Integration

Field technicians worked closely with transportation staff to install and calibrate adaptive system components. Because signal performance varies by location and time of day, technicians performed multiple test cases and tuning adjustments. Then, operators were trained to interpret performance outputs and make proactive adjustments when needed. This collaboration ensured that the South Denver adaptive ATMS deployment worked well under real traffic conditions.

Operational Benefits

As a result of the South Denver adaptive ATMS deployment, the area realized several key improvements:

  • Smoother traffic flow across major corridors
  • Reduced delays during rush hours and peak events
  • Real-time responsiveness to traffic variations
  • Enhanced data for planning and performance review
  • Improved mobility and travel reliability for commuters

Overall, this adaptive ATMS deployment strengthened the South Denver area’s ability to manage traffic under changing conditions and support future growth.
