Securing high-performance uninterrupted power supply systems is critical for maintaining resilient traffic infrastructure across the state of Florida. Specifically, these new super capacitor modules provide a greener alternative to traditional lead-acid batteries, ensuring traffic signals remain operational during power outages.
Anaheim, CA, September 29, 2025 — Econolite, a trusted leader in intelligent traffic management solutions and part of Umovity, announced today that its ZX Super Capacitor-based UPS systems by TechPower Developments, Inc. have been added to the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) Approved Products List (APL) under APL number 685-002-012.
The ZX Super Capacitor Battery Modules in this APL certification can be used with the TechPower UPS or with other FDOT-approved uninterrupted power supply systems for new implementations or to replace lead-acid batteries in existing cabinets.
Innovative Energy Solutions for Traffic Cabinets
TechPower ZX Super Capacitor modules, paired with its series of smart double conversion UPS systems, provide scalable ‘green’ battery energy. Because these modules last decades longer than lead-acid batteries, they offer a superior return on investment for municipalities. Specifically, they require zero maintenance and have zero environmental impact over their entire lifecycle.
“We are excited about the addition of the Super Capacitor UPS system to FDOT’s APL,” said Jim Madden, Econolite’s Senior Vice President of U.S. Sales. “The ZX Super Cap system is ideally suited for providing a greener and higher performing UPS solution to mission critical infrastructure. The uninterrupted power supply systems provided here are going to help deliver safer and more resilient roadways in Florida.”
Technical Specifications and Resilience
The FDOT APL 685-002-012 certification includes part numbers DBLMX1000U-36, DBLMX1000U-48, and DBLMX1400U-36. These components meet the UPS specifications for Florida’s installed base of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and traffic signal cabinets. Consequently, agencies can now deploy the ZX1000 and ZX2000 Graphene-based Super Capacitor battery modules with full confidence in their performance.
Because these modules do not contain chemical batteries, they are virtually unaffected by extremely low or high temperatures. This is a vital feature for uninterrupted power supply systems operating in Florida’s humid and hot climate. Furthermore, they cannot be damaged by storage at low charge and can take hundreds of thousands of charge/discharge cycles without degrading.
Future-Proofing Florida’s Infrastructure
“FDOT’s approval reinforces the dynamic capabilities of the Super Capacitor solution,” said Paul Bianchi, President of TechPower Developments. Therefore, we are providing a more intelligent and longer-lasting alternative to legacy systems. By integrating these uninterrupted power supply systems, Florida furthered its sustainability and safety goals.
The ZX Super Capacitor battery modules can connect in parallel, enabling transportation agencies to deploy as many batteries as required (up to 10). Additionally, by adding the optional DC Hot Swap Switch, users can swap out depleted modules during an outage. In conclusion, these uninterrupted power supply systems represent the next generation of traffic safety technology.
