Los Gatos Smart Signals Project
The Los Gatos Smart Signals Project shows how the Town of Los Gatos upgraded traffic signal systems at 31 intersections with an advanced traffic management system, adaptive control, and modern detection technologies. Because the town wanted safer and more efficient traffic flow, Econolite helped provide and integrate key solutions including an ATMS, adaptive control system, signal performance measures, and a virtual bike detection system. These technologies work together to support improved mobility, better data insights, and enhanced multimodal safety.
Project Background
In 2016, the Town of Los Gatos identified the need to modernize aging traffic signal equipment and expand its capabilities to handle real-time conditions. With support from regional funds and grant programs, the town embarked on a comprehensive upgrade to support adaptive and data-driven traffic management.
System Deployment
To meet the project goals, Econolite provided and installed:
- Replacement traffic signal controllers with Econolite’s Cobalt® Advanced Traffic Controllers (ATC) and EOS software
- An advanced Centracs® Advanced Transportation Management System (ATMS)
- Centracs Edaptive, Econolite’s adaptive traffic control system
- Centracs Signal Performance Measures (SPM) for analytics
- A Virtual Bicycle Detection/Bicycle Priority System to improve cyclist safety and priority
Furthermore, Econolite provided setup, integration, and training for Town staff to ensure these systems were fully functional and ready for day-to-day operations.
Key Features of the Smart Signals Project
- Centralized traffic control with an advanced ATMS
- Adaptive signal timing adjustments based on real-time conditions
- Performance analytics for timing optimization
- Virtual bicycle detection and priority capabilities
- Modern ATC controllers with high-resolution data support
Operational Benefits
As a result of these improvements, the Town now enjoys:
- Smoother traffic flow through coordinated signals
- More responsive signal timing based on actual demand
- Better insights into signal performance and bottlenecks
- Improved safety and priority for bicyclists
- A scalable system that supports future ITS and smart mobility tools
Overall, the Los Gatos Smart Signals Project created a modern, flexible, and data-driven signal network that supports safer and more efficient travel throughout the town.
