In-Ground Detection for Nimitz Highway and Ala Moana Boulevard Resurfacing Project

The in‑ground detection project improved traffic signal operations along Nimitz Highway and Ala Moana Boulevard in Honolulu. Because resurfacing provided an ideal opportunity, the Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) added new in‑ground detection systems to enhance vehicle presence detection at signalized intersections.

Econolite provided expert installation services for new in‑ground loop detectors and coordinated the work with resurfacing activities. This helped ensure accurate detection of vehicles for reliable traffic signal timing and improved overall traffic flow.

In‑Ground Detection Upgrades Along Key Corridors

As part of the resurfacing project, HDOT needed detection upgrades at several signalized intersections. Because older loops were worn or damaged, they no longer provided reliable vehicle detection. Therefore, Econolite installed modern detection loops that work with existing traffic signal controllers, improving system performance.

In‑ground detection systems sense the presence of vehicles at intersections. This information helps signal controllers determine when to extend green time or manage queue conditions in real time. With better detection, traffic operations become more responsive and efficient.

Installation and Materials

Econolite handled all aspects of the in‑ground detection installation. This included:

  • Saw cutting and removal of old pavement loops
  • Placement of new in‑ground loop detector wire
  • Installation of detector lead‑ins and connection boxes
  • Integration with existing traffic signal infrastructure
  • Testing and tuning for optimal controller performance

In addition, technicians verified that the new loop detectors communicated properly with traffic signal controllers. This ensured detection data was accurate and consistent for controller timing decisions.

Key Features of the In‑Ground Detection System

  • New vehicle detection loops embedded in pavement
  • Seamless integration with existing controllers
  • Enhanced sensing for improved traffic signal timing
  • Installation during resurfacing for minimal disruption
  • Support for future signal optimization strategies including Centracs® ATMS

Operational Benefits

The in‑ground detection installation provided several operational benefits. First, traffic signal controllers now receive more reliable vehicle presence data. Next, improved detection helps reduce unnecessary delays and improves green time allocation at key intersections. As a result, signal operations are smoother and more responsive.

In addition, these upgrades help future fit intersections for advanced strategies like adaptive timing or performance monitoring using Centracs® Signal Performance Measures.

Overall, the in‑ground detection work along Nimitz Highway and Ala Moana Boulevard strengthened traffic operations and prepared the corridors for future intelligent transportation system enhancements.
