Town of Bridgewater, VA - Traffic Signal Control Improvements

Traffic Signal Control Improvements

Traffic Signal Control Improvements Case Study

The traffic signal control improvements project helped the City of Bell, California upgrade intersection infrastructure and improve roadway safety. Econolite was selected to modernize traffic signal equipment across several key corridors throughout the city.

Because the city experiences high traffic volumes for its size, reliable signal operations are essential. Therefore, the project focused on upgrading signal hardware, improving pedestrian safety, and supporting more efficient traffic operations.

Traffic Signal Control Improvements for the City of Bell

The City of Bell is located in Los Angeles County and covers just over two square miles. However, the city experiences heavy commuter traffic due to its proximity to major regional corridors.

To address these challenges, the city launched a Capital Improvement Program that included traffic signal control improvements at multiple intersections. The project was funded through the federal Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP).

Traffic Signal Infrastructure Upgrades

As part of the project, Econolite upgraded signal equipment at 28 signalized intersections. The work included removing outdated hardware and installing modern traffic signal components.

These upgrades improve intersection visibility, enhance pedestrian safety, and increase overall system reliability.

The project included:

  • Replacement of more than 300 vehicle signal heads and backplates
  • Installation of nearly 200 pedestrian countdown signal heads
  • Deployment of approximately 160 Accessible Pedestrian Signal (APS) pushbutton systems
  • Intersection hardware upgrades to improve signal visibility
  • Modernized infrastructure to support long-term traffic operations

Technology Integration

Modern traffic infrastructure supports advanced traffic management technologies. Because of this, upgraded intersections can integrate with intelligent transportation systems and centralized traffic control platforms.

For example, cities can manage signal timing and monitor network performance using traffic management software. In addition, modern traffic signal controllers allow agencies to respond quickly to changing traffic conditions.

Detection technologies such as traffic detection sensors provide real-time vehicle data that helps engineers optimize signal timing. These systems are typically housed in reliable traffic signal cabinets designed to protect field equipment.

Finally, agencies often rely on professional traffic engineering services to deploy, maintain, and optimize these systems.

Key Project Features

  • Traffic signal control improvements at 28 intersections
  • More than 300 upgraded vehicle signal heads
  • Nearly 200 pedestrian countdown signals installed
  • Approximately 160 Accessible Pedestrian Signal pushbuttons
  • Modernized infrastructure to support long-term operations

Operational Benefits

The traffic signal control improvements provide several benefits for the City of Bell.

First, upgraded signal heads improve visibility for drivers and pedestrians. Next, countdown pedestrian signals help people understand how much time remains to cross safely.

In addition, Accessible Pedestrian Signals provide audible and tactile cues that improve accessibility for visually impaired pedestrians.

Overall, these upgrades improve intersection safety while strengthening the reliability of the city’s traffic signal network.
