FDOT District 7 Signal Visibility Upgrades
The FDOT District 7 signal visibility upgrades project improves roadway safety across Florida’s west coast region. The Florida Department of Transportation District 7 (FDOT D7) oversees a large transportation network that supports nearly three million residents. As a result, maintaining clear and visible traffic control devices is essential for daily travel.
Because drivers travel more than 33 million miles each day across the District, visibility plays a critical role in safety. Therefore, FDOT D7 continues to invest in modern infrastructure solutions. In addition, these improvements help reduce risk and support a more reliable transportation network.

- Modernized infrastructure across key corridors
- Consistent performance across multiple counties
FDOT District 7’s investment in signal visibility upgrades improves safety and supports reliable travel across high-volume corridors.
Transportation Network Overview
FDOT District 7 manages a large roadway system along Florida’s west coast. The District includes the Tampa Bay metropolitan area and several surrounding counties. Therefore, it plays a key role in regional mobility. In addition, the network supports commuters, freight movement, and tourism throughout the region.
Because the District oversees more than 4,200 highway lane miles, infrastructure reliability is essential. Consequently, ongoing upgrades help ensure safe and efficient travel for all road users.
Project Overview
In October 2025, FDOT District 7 selected Econolite for a safety-focused upgrade project. This project includes internally illuminated street name signs and retroreflective signal backplates. These improvements are designed to increase visibility at intersections. As a result, drivers can better recognize signals and street names, especially in low-light conditions.
Moreover, these upgrades help reduce confusion and improve reaction times. In addition, the project supports FDOT’s broader goal of modernizing transportation infrastructure.
Deployment and Installation
Econolite’s Tampa-based team of IMSA-certified technicians is responsible for field deployment. First, technicians assess existing infrastructure at each location. Next, damaged or missing illuminated street name signs are replaced. In total, 120 locations are included in this effort.
In addition, retroreflective flexible backplates are installed at 64 intersections. These backplates improve signal visibility by creating contrast behind signal heads. Therefore, drivers can more easily identify signal indications in various lighting conditions.
Technology Used in This Project

Program Continuity and Additional Projects
This project builds on a series of successful contracts between FDOT District 7 and Econolite. For example, Econolite previously supported the Power Outage Emergency Beacons (POEB) installation project. In addition, Econolite is part of a design-build team for the I-275 Integrated Corridor Management (ICM) project in Hillsborough County.
Because of this ongoing partnership, FDOT D7 benefits from consistent expertise and reliable delivery. Moreover, these efforts support long-term improvements across the District’s transportation network.
Operational Benefits
The FDOT District 7 signal visibility upgrades deliver several important benefits. First, improved visibility helps reduce driver confusion at intersections. Next, enhanced signage supports safer navigation during nighttime and adverse weather conditions. In addition, consistent upgrades improve system reliability across multiple counties. Furthermore, these improvements align with long-term infrastructure goals. As a result, FDOT D7 provides a safer and more efficient roadway network.
