Traffic Signal Hardware Upgrades – City of Cathedral City, CA

Located within 10 miles of Palm Springs, the City of Cathedral City, California is the second most populous city in the rapidly growing Coachella Valley region. As traffic volumes increase, the City has initiated a critical transportation infrastructure improvement initiative. This initiative is part of the broader California state-funded Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP). Consequently, the Traffic Signal Hardware Upgrades project falls within Cycle 11C HSIP, which is a federally supported program aimed at enhancing roadway safety through strategic upgrades and engineering improvements.

As a result, this project helps ensure that Cathedral City’s transportation network can meet its long-term mobility and safety goals. Moreover, it represents a proactive step to modernize traffic control infrastructure while supporting economic and community connections.

Project Snapshot

Agency City of Cathedral City, CA
Project Type Traffic Signal Hardware & Safety Lighting Upgrades
Scope Traffic signal modernization, reflective backplates, LED roadway safety lighting
Key Technologies Traffic signal controllers, reflective backplates, LED safety lighting, traffic cabinets

Key Project Outcomes

  • Upgraded 49 intersections with modern traffic signal hardware. Consequently, drivers experience better visibility and safer intersections.
  • Installed reflective backplates to enhance signal visibility. In addition, these backplates help reduce confusion and improve compliance at intersections.
  • Upgraded LED roadway safety lighting at key locations. As a result, both drivers and pedestrians benefit from brighter, more reliable lighting.
  • Improved safety for motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians. Moreover, this aligns with Cathedral City’s Vision Zero and ITS goals.
  • Created a more resilient traffic signal network. Finally, the upgrades support future traffic growth and regional mobility planning.

By modernizing traffic signal hardware and lighting, Cathedral City enhances safety, supports mobility, and prepares for future traffic demands.

Project Overview

In 2025, Econolite Systems, Inc. was awarded the contract to implement and provide construction support for Cathedral City’s Traffic Signal Hardware Upgrades project. Therefore, Econolite began work on upgrading traffic signals at 49 intersections across the City. In addition, reflective backplates were installed to improve driver visibility, and LED roadway safety lighting was upgraded at strategic locations.

Furthermore, these improvements help the City align with regional ITS initiatives and Vision Zero objectives. As a result, residents and roadway users benefit from safer, more reliable intersections and better lighting conditions. Additionally, the project contributes to a transportation network that supports both community connectivity and commerce.

Intersection and Signal Upgrades

The project includes:

  • Upgrading traffic signal controllers at 49 intersections. Then, new components were integrated for improved signal timing.
  • Installing reflective backplates on traffic signals. Consequently, drivers can see signals more clearly in all conditions.
  • Upgrading LED roadway safety lighting at key locations. In addition, pedestrians and motorists now benefit from brighter, consistent illumination.

Technology Used in This Project

Operational Benefits

These upgrades provide several key benefits:

  • Enhanced intersection visibility and safety for all road users. Consequently, traffic incidents are reduced.
  • Reliable traffic signal operation even under varying conditions. Moreover, the City can maintain consistent performance.
  • Better pedestrian and cyclist safety through improved signal and lighting systems. In addition, these upgrades support vulnerable roadway users.
  • Modernized infrastructure that supports future traffic growth. Finally, the City prepares for long-term transportation needs.
  • Efficient implementation with minimal disruption to traffic. Furthermore, Econolite ensures timely project completion aligned with City goals.
