The Florida Department of Transportation District Seven (FDOT D7), headquartered in Tampa, FL, manages the transportation network and infrastructure for five heavily populated counties in West Central Florida. This region features a growing population approaching four million residents. The transportation infrastructure it oversees includes nearly five million lane miles with 40+ million miles traveled daily. Because of this size, FDOT D7 experiences transportation infrastructure pressures from large swings in commuter and tourist traffic volumes. In addition, the area deals with transportation infrastructure damage from inclement weather.
To support its ongoing mission of ensuring safe and efficient transportation systems, FDOT D7 sought an experienced traffic signal contractor. The agency needed a team to provide routine maintenance, preventative maintenance, ITS upgrades, and emergency readiness with a focus on operational safety. Therefore, in late 2024, Econolite Systems, Inc. (Econolite) was awarded the traffic signal modification and Repair Services contract by FDOT D7. Under this agreement, Econolite furnishes all labor, equipment, and materials to maintain, modify, and repair traffic signal installations throughout the district.

Project Overview
Under the contract, Econolite’s team of IMSA-certified technicians is responsible for district-wide modification and repair services. Specifically, they work on existing traffic signals to fix or modify features and components. If necessary, the team installs new five-section signal head components to bring the signals into compliant operation.
This comprehensive effort also includes the re-span of existing span wire assemblies at strategically identified locations. For instance, these structural tasks involve the full replacement of span wires and associated components like disconnects and ancillary hardware. By preserving existing strain poles and upgrading to two-point attachment spans, Econolite ensures the durability of signalized intersections while minimizing costs.
This effort aligns with broader safety initiatives such as video detection and safety enhancement projects that improve multimodal operations.
Deployment and Installation
Econolite is tasked with the setup, installation, modification, integration, and testing of vehicular signals, pedestrian signals, beacons, and detection sensor systems.
