Traffic Signal Preventative Maintenance Program Case Study

The traffic signal preventative maintenance program helped the City of Brea, California keep its traffic signals and related equipment operating reliably. Because regular upkeep prevents unexpected failures, the city contracted with Econolite to provide scheduled maintenance and 24/7 emergency support for its traffic control assets.

Program Overview

Under this traffic signal preventative maintenance program, Econolite provides complete maintenance services for 52 signals and associated systems throughout Brea. Services include routine inspections, preventive checks, repairs, and emergency response to equipment issues.

Specifically, the maintenance covers traffic signals, In-Roadway Warning Light systems (IRWL), Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFB), changeable message signs (CMS), speed feedback signs, flashing beacons, ITS components, and related infrastructure. All equipment is inspected regularly to catch and correct issues early, before they impact traffic operations.

Maintenance Activities

As part of the preventative program, Econolite performs quarterly and annual maintenance on all covered systems. These checks include reviewing mechanical and electrical components, verifying operational status, and updating documentation for each device. Because maintenance involves multiple types of equipment, a consistent schedule ensures all systems receive proper service throughout the year.

In addition, an annual inventory of all traffic control and safety devices is prepared. This inventory helps the city plan upgrades and replacements as equipment ages or becomes due for service.

Emergency Support

Because traffic signal failures can disrupt travel and safety, the program also includes 24-hour emergency response. Econolite’s technicians are available during weekends and holidays to address sudden or critical issues that may affect signal operations. This rapid response capability helps restore functionality quickly and minimize downtime for the city’s roadway users.

Operational Benefits

As a result of the traffic signal preventative maintenance program, the City of Brea benefits from:

  • Consistent and reliable signal and safety system performance
  • Reduced risk of unexpected failures
  • Proactive identification of equipment issues
  • Faster recovery during emergencies
  • Better planning for future signal upgrades

This structured approach helps ensure traffic signals and related systems operate safely and efficiently for everyone who travels in and through the City.
