Accessible Pedestrian Signals (APS) – City of Cypress, CA

The City of Cypress, CA, located in northwest Orange County, manages high-speed and high-volume traffic between Orange and Los Angeles counties. Because of this, improving pedestrian safety is a top priority. The City launched APS Project 407 to deploy accessible pedestrian signals that enhance safety, accessibility, and mobility across key intersections.

Project Snapshot

Agency City of Cypress, CA
Project Type Accessible Pedestrian Signals (APS) Deployment
Scope Installation of Polara APS systems at 70+ intersections, signal upgrades, wiring and integration
Key Technologies Polara iDS2 Push Buttons, ICCU-S2 Smart Control System, APS audio and vibrotactile systems

Key Project Outcomes

  • Improved pedestrian safety at high-volume intersections
  • Enhanced accessibility for visually impaired users
  • ADA-compliant pedestrian signal systems
  • Deployment across more than 70 intersections
  • Improved confidence and usability of pedestrian crossings

Accessible pedestrian signals improve safety and provide clear crossing information for all roadway users.

Project Overview

Before this project, many intersections relied on standard push buttons without audible or tactile feedback. As a result, individuals with visual or mobility impairments faced challenges navigating crossings safely.

To address this, the City implemented accessible pedestrian signals that provide audible messages, locator tones, and vibrotactile feedback. These features improve clarity and consistency at intersections while supporting ADA compliance.

This effort aligns with broader safety initiatives such as video detection and safety enhancement projects that improve multimodal operations.

Deployment and Installation

In February 2026, Econolite was awarded the APS Project 407 contract. The project includes installation at more than 70 intersections, along with wiring, conduit upgrades, and full system integration.

Econolite is responsible for deploying Polara APS Crosswalk Systems and integrating Smart Control Systems into the City’s existing infrastructure. These upgrades ensure seamless operation with current signal systems.

Similar large-scale deployments, such as traffic signal system programs, demonstrate the importance of maintaining and upgrading intersection technology.

Technology Used in This Project

Operational Benefits

The accessible pedestrian signals deployment provides Cypress with:

  • Improved pedestrian safety and accessibility
  • Compliance with ADA standards
  • Clear and consistent crossing information
  • Enhanced multimodal transportation support
  • Scalable infrastructure for future upgrades

In addition, these improvements support Complete Streets initiatives and align with regional mobility strategies. Advanced systems such as traffic data analytics platforms can further enhance system performance and planning.
