Iowa DOT ITS Maintenance Program
The Iowa Department of Transportation (Iowa DOT) selected Econolite Systems to support its statewide ITS maintenance program. This Iowa DOT ITS maintenance effort includes asset management, repair, installation, and ongoing upkeep of field devices deployed throughout the state.
Statewide ITS Maintenance Overview
Iowa DOT’s ITS network consists of devices such as motion vehicle detection sensors (MVDS), closed-circuit television (CCTV), dynamic message signs (DMS), road weather information systems (RWIS), snow system ramp gates, over-height detection systems (OHDS), wrong-way detection systems (WWDS), and intersection conflict warning systems (ICWS). All devices are connected to a central Traffic Management Center (TMC) using a combination of wireless and fiber communications.
This statewide ITS program began incremental deployment in the early 2000s and continues to expand city by city. The network supports safer and more efficient transportation system performance, as well as real-time traveler information delivered to the public.
Econolite’s Proactive MMS Solution
To support this program, Econolite deployed the Centracs® Maintenance Management System (MMS). Because Iowa DOT’s ITS field devices were not consistently operational statewide, Econolite was tasked to increase the system uptime from about 54% to over 98% within two years of the contract start.
The Centracs MMS provides a centralized platform to monitor, schedule, track, and manage ITS assets. In addition, because MMS integrates detailed asset information and maintenance history, Iowa DOT staff can make faster, data-driven decisions. Econolite also deploys trained and certified field technicians to deliver maintenance, new device installs, and system expansion support.
