Lloydminster AB/SK ATMS Deployment Case Study

The cities of Lloydminster, Alberta and Saskatchewan collaborated to modernize their traffic signal systems. To do this, they selected the Centracs® Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) to replace older control servers and provide improved signal coordination across the entire joint jurisdiction.

Project Background

Lloydminster is a unique bi-provincial city where traffic operations are managed across two provincial regions. Because of this complexity, the city required a centralized, consistent traffic management solution that could support time-based plans, emergency vehicle preemption, and real-time monitoring from a single operations center.

Previously, the signal control system relied on outdated hardware and lacked the flexibility needed for modern adaptive signal strategies. Therefore, a more robust and integrated traffic management platform was necessary to improve operational performance and reliability.

The Solution

Econolite deployed the Centracs ATMS platform as the core traffic management system for Lloydminster. This system provides centralized signal timing control and remote monitoring capabilities for intersections throughout both Alberta and Saskatchewan.

In addition, Econolite integrated new traffic signal controllers to replace legacy equipment. These controllers provide better responsiveness, improved timing accuracy, and more flexible control strategies to support varying traffic patterns across the bi-provincial network.

To further enhance field operations, traffic cabinets were evaluated and upgraded where needed to ensure compatibility with the new ATMS. Enhanced vehicle detection systems were also added at key locations to provide real-time traffic data for system monitoring and performance analysis.

Deployment & Integration Activities

The deployment included coordinated efforts such as:

  • Hardware installation and configuration
  • Field testing and signal verification
  • Communications integration between controller and the Centracs server
  • Graphical interface setup for real-time visualization
  • Staff training for local operations personnel

Because Lloydminster’s signal system spans two provinces, this coordination was essential to ensure compatibility and consistent performance across jurisdictional boundaries.

Operational Benefits

As a result of the Lloydminster AB/SK ATMS deployment:

  • Traffic signal coordination improved throughout the merged network
  • Engineers gained real-time data visibility
  • System reliability increased with faster response times
  • Staff can now remotely adjust timing plans as needed

Overall, this ATMS deployment strengthened traffic operations in both Alberta and Saskatchewan and provided a sustainable platform for ongoing traffic management improvements.
