Newport Beach ATMS Deployment Case Study

The Newport Beach ATMS deployment helped the City of Newport Beach, California improve traffic signal coordination and corridor performance along key arterial streets. Because the city serves a mix of local, commuter, and tourist traffic, traditional timing plans alone could not adapt to real‑time demand. Therefore, Newport Beach chose a modern traffic management solution to better manage flow and reduce delays.

Project Background

Newport Beach’s traffic network includes major corridors such as Newport Blvd, Coast Hwy (Pacific Coast Highway), and Santa Ana Ave. Because these corridors connect to regional freeways, congestion often extends beyond peak hours. As a result, the city needed a system that could monitor traffic in real time, respond quickly to changing conditions, and support future growth.

Implementation

To meet these goals, Econolite deployed the
Centracs® Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) platform — Econolite’s core traffic control software platform for real‑time adaptive signal management and centralized signal decision support.

This system provides centralized control over signal timing, performance monitoring, and real‑time data analysis. Operators can now view corridor performance dashboards and adjust timing plans as needed.

Additionally, the project included upgrades to field infrastructure such as advanced
traffic signal controllers and enhanced communication links connecting intersections to the traffic management center. Because reliable communications are critical, new fiber and wireless links were deployed to ensure consistent data flow. As a result, operators now receive timely updates and can respond faster to traffic changes.

Key Features of the Newport Beach ATMS Deployment

  • Centralized signal timing and control via Centracs® ATMS
  • Real‑time monitoring and performance feedback
  • Upgraded traffic signal controllers
  • Improved communications infrastructure
  • Timely adjustments based on travel patterns

Operational Benefits

As a result of the Newport Beach ATMS deployment, the city has seen several operational gains:

  • Better coordination across major corridors
  • Improved responsiveness to traffic changes
  • Reduced delays during peak and off‑peak hours
  • Greater visibility into real‑time conditions
  • Stronger foundation for advanced traffic strategies

Overall, this ATMS deployment supports Newport Beach’s transportation goals and provides a scalable system for ongoing signal improvements.
