LACEY, WA – ATMS Traffic Signal System Upgrade
In 2013, Econolite completed a Lacey WA ATMS upgrade for the City of Lacey, Washington. The project modernized the city’s traffic signal system. It also improved real-time monitoring and communications reliability.
As a result, Lacey gained better control of signal timing, traffic flow, and system performance across its network.
Project Overview
The City of Lacey needed a scalable and modern traffic management system. Therefore, Econolite deployed the full Centracs® ATMS platform. The system includes modules for monitoring, synchronization, performance measures, and CCTV integration.
In addition, Econolite designed and installed a secure IP-based communications network. This network ensures reliable connectivity between field devices and the Traffic Operations Center.
Traffic Management & Controller Upgrades
As part of this ATMS upgrade, Econolite supplied and configured the following:
- Centracs ATMS with Local Edition, Synchro Interface, Enhanced MOE, and Advanced CCTV modules
- 34 intersections equipped with Model 333D cabinets and ASC/3 rack-mount NEMA controllers
- Transit-ready cabinet wiring with TSP data key and future GPS receiver provisions
- Controller migration and integration of existing signal timing settings
- Updated system graphics and signal diagrams for 32 intersections
- Centralized monitoring supporting up to 20 PTZ cameras and 5 operator workstations
Because of this upgrade, the City can manage signal timing plans more efficiently. Staff can also monitor traffic conditions in real time. As a result, response times to incidents have improved.
Communications Network Design & Integration
Econolite designed and deployed a secure communications backbone. The network connects traffic signal controllers to the Centracs server at Lacey’s Traffic Operations Center (TOC).
Specifically, the system includes ISP connectivity, hardened field switches, Ethernet-over-Copper links, and secure VPN connections. Together, these components ensure reliable performance across all 32 signalized intersections.
Training, Testing & Ongoing Support
Econolite provided full system documentation and hands-on staff training. In addition, the team conducted comprehensive acceptance testing before system launch.
The project includes a one-year warranty and a Software Maintenance Agreement (SMA). Therefore, the City continues to receive updates and technical support.
