CARY, NC – ATMS Integration & Traffic System Modernization
In 2015, the Town of Cary, North Carolina partnered with Econolite Systems to upgrade its aging traffic management infrastructure. The project delivered a turnkey Centracs® Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) designed to simplify signal timing plans, support traffic-responsive control, and improve overall traffic flow across the community’s road network.
Project Overview
Econolite implemented a full Centracs ATMS platform that gives Cary’s traffic engineers better tools to manage signal timing plans throughout the day and quickly adjust to changing traffic conditions. The system also supports real-time monitoring of traffic cameras and infrastructure across the network, helping operators respond to incidents more effectively.
Key System Features
The upgraded traffic system includes the following components and capabilities:
- Centracs ATMS software for centralized signal management
- Support for 27 CCTV cameras at key intersections
- A 100-mile fiber optic network linking signals and cameras
- Integration with fiber optic connections at fire stations and parks
- Approximately 189 advanced traffic signal controllers
- Emergency vehicle preemption for prioritized response
- Live video feeds shared with Cary TV and NCDOT real-time systems
This system helps traffic engineers fine-tune signal timing, accommodate scheduled events, and quickly react to traffic incidents. The real-time camera feeds support Cary’s “Wink-Cary Traffic Info” and broadcast channels, giving residents access to live traffic conditions.
