Charlotte NC ITS Integration & Centracs ATMS Upgrade
The City of Charlotte, North Carolina completed a major Charlotte NC ITS Integration to modernize its traffic signal system. Today, the city manages nearly 800 signalized intersections. Therefore, Charlotte needed a centralized and scalable solution to improve daily traffic operations.
To meet this need, the city partnered with Econolite to deploy the Centracs® Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS). In addition, the project included upgrades to key field equipment to support long-term system performance.
Project Goals
The primary goal of this Charlotte NC ITS Integration was to improve visibility and control across the Charlotte traffic signal network. At the same time, the city required a solution that could be deployed quickly and operate reliably.
Specifically, the project focused on:
- Centralized control of the Charlotte traffic signal system
- Deployment of a modern traffic management software platform
- Integration of upgraded traffic signal controllers
- Improved real-time monitoring and diagnostics
- A scalable ITS foundation for future expansion
ATMS Deployment and Integration
Because the City of Charlotte needed results quickly, the Charlotte NC ATMS upgrade followed an accelerated schedule. Within 60 days of contract initiation, the Centracs ATMS was fully installed and operational. Shortly after, controller cutover was completed to minimize disruption.
As part of the Charlotte NC ITS Integration, existing central business district controllers were replaced with advanced ASC/3 traffic signal controllers. In addition, system data was converted and graphical intersection displays were developed. As a result, traffic engineers now have clearer visibility into real-time signal operations.
Key Components of the Charlotte NC ITS Integration
This Charlotte NC ATMS upgrade included several core system elements. Together, these components improve performance and long-term reliability.
- Centracs® ATMS for centralized signal timing and management
- Advanced traffic signal controller deployment
- Integration with existing traffic cabinets
- Real-time monitoring and reporting tools
- Implementation support through professional services
Consequently, the Charlotte traffic signal system now operates with improved coordination and enhanced system awareness.
Operational Benefits for Charlotte
Following this Charlotte NC ITS Integration, the City of Charlotte benefits from a modern and centralized ATMS platform. Most importantly, traffic engineers have greater control over system timing and performance.
- Improved signal coordination across major corridors
- Faster response to changing traffic conditions
- Greater visibility into system-wide performance
- A scalable ITS architecture that supports future growth
Overall, this Charlotte NC ATMS upgrade strengthens the city’s traffic operations and supports safer, more efficient mobility throughout Charlotte.
