Macomb County MI ITS Integration & Centracs ATMS Upgrade
Macomb County, Michigan partnered with Econolite to modernize traffic signal operations across the county. This Macomb County MI ITS Integration included deployment of the Centracs® Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) along with upgrades to critical field infrastructure.
Because Macomb County manages a large and growing traffic network, officials needed a centralized traffic management software platform capable of improving coordination, visibility, and long-term system scalability.
Project Goals
The Macomb County MI ITS Integration was designed to strengthen overall system performance. Specifically, the county aimed to:
- Deploy a modern Advanced Traffic Management System
- Improve coordination between intersections using advanced traffic signal controllers
- Enhance communications between field devices and the central system
- Provide real-time monitoring and reporting capabilities
- Create a scalable foundation aligned with broader ITS solutions
In addition, the county required a solution that could support future expansion while maintaining reliable daily operations.
ATMS Deployment & System Integration
Econolite implemented the Centracs ATMS to centralize traffic signal control. First, the system was installed and configured to support communications between intersections and the traffic management center. Then, upgraded ASC/3 traffic signal controllers were integrated into the platform.
In many locations, existing traffic cabinets were evaluated and integrated to ensure reliable connectivity. Where needed, additional traffic detection systems were incorporated to improve data accuracy and operational awareness.
Furthermore, Econolite provided comprehensive professional services, including system configuration, testing, and staff training. As a result, Macomb County engineers were able to quickly manage signal timing plans and monitor system performance.
Key Components of the Macomb County MI ITS Integration
- Centracs® ATMS for centralized signal timing and management
- Deployment of advanced traffic signal controllers
- Integration with existing traffic cabinets
- Support for traffic detection technologies
- Scalable architecture aligned with Transportation Management Systems
Operational Benefits for Macomb County
As a result of this Macomb County MI ITS Integration, the county now operates a centralized and data-driven traffic signal system. Consequently, engineers benefit from:
- Improved signal coordination across major corridors
- Faster identification of system issues
- Greater visibility into real-time traffic conditions
- A scalable ATMS platform that supports long-term mobility goals
Overall, this ATMS upgrade strengthens traffic operations throughout Macomb County while providing a modern foundation for future ITS expansion.
