Portsmouth VA ITS Integration & Traffic System Upgrade
The City of Portsmouth, Virginia completed a comprehensive Portsmouth VA ITS Integration to modernize its traffic signal system. Econolite Systems deployed the Centracs® Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) and updated field equipment to improve signal timing, monitoring, and response across the city’s network.
Because Portsmouth serves both local commuters and regional traffic, city leaders chose a centralized, scalable solution that improves daily operations and supports future growth.
Project Goals
The main goals of the Portsmouth VA ITS Integration were to:
- Deploy a centralized traffic management system
- Improve signal coordination across major corridors
- Enhance real-time monitoring and reporting
- Strengthen communications between field devices and the ATMS
- Create a scalable foundation for future ITS expansions
In addition to these goals, the project aimed to reduce delays and help engineers respond more quickly to changing traffic conditions.
ATMS Deployment & Integration
Econolite installed and configured the Centracs ATMS, giving Portsmouth traffic engineers centralized control over signal operations. First, the ATMS was connected to field hardware, enabling secure communications between devices and the central system. Then, upgraded traffic signal controllers were deployed at key intersections to replace legacy equipment and increase responsiveness.
In many locations, existing traffic cabinets were evaluated and integrated into the new system rather than replaced. In addition, advanced traffic detection systems were deployed to improve data accuracy and operational visibility.
Throughout the project, Econolite provided comprehensive professional services, including system configuration, staff training, and acceptance testing. As a result, Portsmouth staff can manage signal timing plans and monitor performance with confidence.
Key Components of the Portsmouth VA ITS Integration
- Centracs® ATMS for centralized timing and control
- Deployment of advanced traffic signal controllers
- Field integration with existing traffic cabinets
- Support for traffic detection and performance monitoring
- Professional services for training, support, and implementation
Operational Benefits for Portsmouth
As a result of the Portsmouth VA ITS Integration, the city now operates a centralized and data-driven traffic signal system. This upgrade gives engineers:
- Improved coordination across major signal corridors
- Faster response to changing traffic conditions
- Greater visibility into network performance
- A scalable architecture that supports future growth
Overall, this ATMS upgrade supports more efficient traffic operations and long-term mobility goals throughout Portsmouth.
